Ping Powered Cabrera Won at the Belfry Angel
Cabrera claimed the biggest title of his burgeoning career when he closed with
a three under par 69 to pip England's Barry Lane at the International tournament
at The Belfry last weekend. Cabrera
won his first European Tour title at the 2001 Open de Argentina but he moved into
a different class at The Belfry when he overcame a strong field that included
most of the leading names in European golf. The former caddie from Cordoba opened
with a four under par 68 and then added rounds of 73, 68 and 69 for a 10 under
par aggregate of 278. He finished one shot ahead of Lane and two in front of an
illustrious trio comprising Colin Montgomerie, Padraig Harrington and New Zealand's
Michael Campbell. The
Argentinian won last year's Driving Distance statistical category on the European
Tour with an average of 303.5 yard and his prodigious hitting was one of the keys
to his success at The Belfry. Cabrera
uses a 5.5 degree PING TiSI Tec driver that conforms on both the European Tour
and on the US PGA Tour and at The Belfry he wielded it with such effect that he
averaged a colossal 304.5 yards from the tee. Cabrera's
TiSi Tec driver is 45 inches long and features a RSS hosel and a Grafalloy Tour
X shaft. He also plays the PING i3 O-Size irons, red colour code lie angle fitted
with Dynamic Gold X100 shafts, and an Anser 2 putter, 34 inch, black colour code
lie angle, which he used to hole several crunch putts coming down the stretch. The
win at The Belfry came on Cabrera's first trip across the Atlantic this season.
Prior to his arrival in Europe, he spent several successful months on the US PGA
Tour during which he had several high finishes and secured his US playing card.
These included a share of fifth place at the Genuity Championship, a tie for eighth
place at the Worldcom Classic and a share of ninth place at the Masters at Augusta
National. |
