Technology from PING Golfers
looking for help from the latest technological advances should look no further
than the new PING TiSI Tec titanium fairway woods, which are introduced this Spring
to complement PING’s highly successful TiSI Tec drivers. The
new PING TiSI Tec fairway wood range is to feature a strong 3-wood (12 degrees),
a standard 3-wood (14 degrees), 5-wood (17 degrees) and 7-wood (20 degrees), all
offering a wide range of custom fitting options.
These include eight hosel positions with varying lie angles from two degrees flat
to four degrees upright, three different face angles, various graphite and steel
shaft options, plus grips in various styles and sizes. The
latest PING TiSI Tec fairway woods feature many of the technological advances
built into the company’s highly successful TiSI Tec Drivers as well as a number
of new advances that are unique to the fairway woods. “With
the TiSI Tec fairway woods, we’ve added several new design and manufacturing features
to create an innovative product that enhances club performance, while still maintaining
the ability to custom-fit each golfer individually,” said John A. Solheim, PING
Chairman and CEO. The
TiSI Tec drivers and fairway woods are both manufactured using the latest CMT
or Chemical Milling Technology. This
process increases the performance and durability of the titanium while at the
same time allowing PING to cut down wall thickness and reposition mass in the
form of weight pads placed strategically to help to control ball flight. In
the 3-wood, the weight pads are positioned towards the face to reduce spin and
maximise roll. In the 5-wood, the weight pads are centred inside the club head
whereas in the 7-wood the weight pads are situated nearer the back of the head,
further away from the club face. “Removing
the titanium casting’s brittle alpha layer permits us to precisely control wall
thickness and more than double the durability of our new titanium fairway woods.
In addition, these new fairway woods feature a zirconium sole plate and a tungsten
bottom weight for a low centre of gravity,” said Solheim. “They
are very easy to hit.” There is also a small, elliptical-shaped weight inserted
into the back of the TiSI Tec fairway wood heads and it plays an important role
in the performance of the clubs. The
back weight is positioned far from the centre of gravity in line with the club’s
impact point and is designed to stabilise the club head during impact.
“The back weight also provides
resistance to twisting on heel and toe shots for greater accuracy, while reducing
loft changes caused by hitting the ball high or low in the face,” confirmed Solheim.
Another important
feature of the PING TiSI Tec fairway woods is the JX hosel, a multi-functional,
thermoplastic devise patented more than two years ago. The ingenious JX hosel
offers golfers eight combinations of lie angle to match their stance and swing,
enabling them to hit longer, straighter and more accurate fairway shots. The
clubs also feature a Cushin Selective Filtering Insert, a product developed by
PING in 1997 and standard in all PING steel and ? Series” graphite shafts on metal
woods. The benefit of the Cushin insert is that it screens out and dissipates
unwanted shaft frequencies that can cause muscle fatigue.
The new TiSi Tec fairway woods are offered in custom-fit steel shafts in JZ regular,
stiff and extra stiff flexes. They are also available in five proprietary flexes
and three PING Grafalloy flexes to give golfers the ability to select the proper
shaft for their golf game, no matter their skill level. Called
the ? Series”, the proprietary flexes include L, A, R, S and X while the PING
Grafalloy Tour flexes include R, S and X. Standard
length of the TiSI Tec 3-wood in both 12-degree and 14-degree models will be 43
inches although custom-fit lengths are also available. Head size will be 199cc.
Standard length
of the TiSI Tec 5-wood will be 42.5 inches and is 42 inches for the 7-wood. Head
size will be 165cc and 150 cc respectively. Suggested
retail price of the TiSI Tec fairway woods will be £375 (steel shafts) and £420
(graphite shafts). Both right and left-handed men’s and ladies models will be
