Father & Son Make Greenkeeping History

A father and son team are proving they are a cut above in the world of greenkeeping. Trevor Smith and his son, also called Trevor, have made history in the profession thanks to their hard work and a helping hand from the Greenkeepers Training Committee (GTC).

Trevor Snr, 41, has successfully gained his NVQ Level 4 Amenity Horticulture Management, and Trevor Jnr, 23, who got the greenkeeping bug while training under his father, became the first GTC greenkeeping student to achieve the Modern Apprenticeship Certificate.

Trevor Snr, Head Greenkeeper at North Shore Golf Club in Skegness, said: "Greenkeeping is now regarded as a profession and, having helped other lads over the years, it seemed only natural to help Trevor in the same way".

"The job has given me a good living, training opportunities and the chance to fulfill my true potential. It has also allowed me to help young greenkeepers make a success of their careers."

Trevor Jnr, currently Deputy Head Greenkeeper at South Herts Golf Club, gained the nationally recognised Apprenticeship Certificate which includes NVQ Levels 2 and 3, Pesticides and First Aid with guidance from the GTC. He is now working towards his NVQ Level 4 and hopes one day to become an assessor like his dad.
