results for the first quarter which ended on March 31 have revealed a 61 per cent
increase in turnover to £7.3 million and a 63 per cent rise in gross profit to
£4.1 million. The
number of members now stands at 29,045 compared with 17,500 at the same stage
last year and the number of rounds played during the quarter was up 68 per cent
to 141,000. Clubhaus
opened a new health club at Nizels in April and new memberships sold this year
at the Kent club now total more than 2,200. A new health and fitness club also
opened at Mapledurham at the beginning of May and recruited more than 1,100 members.
The final stage
of the £3 million refurbishment of The Tytherington was completed during May with
the opening of a gym and new changing facilities, boosting membership at the Cheshire
complex to over 4,000. Robert
Bourne, the Clubhaus chairman, said: "The start of the year has seen an encouraging
performance across the Group in all areas, which will serve as a solid base as
we enter our busy season. "A
fourth club to be opened this year will be at Meyrick Park in July and advance
sales of memberships have been very encouraging. The success of our twin golf/health
and fitness concept helps ensure that our clubs are used 365 days a year and has
allowed membership numbers to grow strongly. In addition golf membership has increased
across all categories in the first quarter along with a strong usage of the clubs." Clubhaus,
whose other health clubs are at Castle Royle in Wiltshire and Mentmore in Buckinghamshire,
also plan to open similar facilities at The Warwickshire later this year.
