St Andrews Links Linking Up At Last

The second phase of the installation of a £2.5m computerised irrigation system will begin this autumn on the Old, New and Jubilee Courses at St
Andrews.

When the project is finished in about six months' time, all of the St Andrews Links will be part of one network consisting of over 100 miles of pipeline and 4,000 sprinklers or 'pop-ups'.
Gordon Moir, head greenkeeper of the Eden course where the system is already
operating, said: "Having control over individual sprinklers enables us to
target specific areas which require irrigation - such as the tops of mounds
which dry out and worn areas which have been seeded. This both ensures
maximum effectiveness and reduces water wastage."

Work is due to be carried out on one course at a time - the New in October
and November, the Old in December and January, and the Jubilee in February
and March.
